The ultimate renovation dream – the basement
Basements are possibly the most underused and underappreciated part of the home. But they have the potential to remarkably change the way you live and use your space. As we ourselves are about to begin a basement renovation I thought I would take the opportunity to write a blog about it.
A man cave? or family rumpus room?
With my husband now being outnumbered by girls in our household this was the first decision that needed to be made. As the builder and only male in the house, he maintains he needs this space to get away from it all. However, thinking of family life and the future use of this space I could see this dream may not always be reality. So this is where the design of the space becomes crucially important. A classic multi-use space is probably the best answer to all basement design problems. One where the guys can watch sports, the woman can gather for drinks and all the kids have a space to play board games and have sleepovers seems to be a great solution. Creative colours and materials with a masculine twist create a warm inviting place for the whole family. One where you feel like curling up to watch a movie but robust enough to leave the kids down there creating havoc.
Storage
The best thing about renovating your basement is the extra storage possibilities it creates. With clever built-in cabinetry and cupboards, all those things you haven’t found a place for may find their home downstairs. Be creative with spaces and use them to their full potential.
